Making the Transition: Moving from a Cot to a Floor Bed

Making the Transition: Moving from a Cot to a Floor Bed

Transitioning your little one from a cot to a toddler bed is a big step - exciting for them, nerve-racking for you, and sometimes a little chaotic! But don’t worry, with the right approach, it can be a smooth and positive experience for everyone. Here’s how to make the switch seamlessly, or go straight to our toddler floor beds and have a look for yourself!

1. Time It Right

Every child is different, but most toddlers move to a bed between 18 months and 3 years, so it does entirely depend on what is comfortable for you, and your child. Signs they might be ready include climbing out of their cot, feeling as if they have outgrown their cot, or maybe you have a new baby in the house who needs the cot. Whichever reason it may be, make sure to ask them - they may not be ready!

2. Create a Safe Sleep Space

Floor beds are great for independence, but safety comes first. Opt for a low-to-the-ground design (our toddler beds are perfect for this) and ensure the room is childproofed - secure furniture, remove tripping hazards, and add soft rugs for a cosy feel. We have a whole collection of furniture which is perfect for making their room feel more comfortable!

3. Let Them Be Part of the Process

Involve your toddler in setting up their new bed. Let them pick out bedding, choose a favourite cuddly toy to keep with them, or help ‘build’ their bed so they feel a sense of ownership and excitement. A great start would be to have a look at this page with them to see what catches their eye!

4. Keep the Routine Consistent

A new bed can be a big change, so keep bedtime as familiar as possible. Stick to the usual wind-down routine - bath, books, cuddles - and keep the sleep environment similar to their cot days to ease the transition.

5. Use Sleep Cues

A comforting blanket, a nightlight, or a familiar stuffed animal can help your toddler feel secure in their new space. Our book bag attachment is also perfect for keeping their favourite bedtime stories within arm’s reach.

6. Expect Some Bedtime Wanderings

With newfound freedom comes the temptation to explore! If your toddler keeps getting up, calmly guide them back to bed and reinforce bedtime expectations. A soft floor rug or play mat nearby can cushion any tumbles while they adjust.

7. Make It Fun!

Celebrate this milestone! Talk about how ‘grown-up’ their new bed is, set up a canopy or themed accessories, and turn the transition into an adventure.

8. Be Patient

Adjusting to a new sleep setup takes time. Some toddlers transition smoothly, while others need a few weeks to fully settle in. Stay consistent, offer reassurance, and soon enough, they’ll be loving their new big-kid bed.

Moving from a cot to a toddler bed is a huge milestone, and with a little preparation (and a lot of patience), it can be an exciting and positive experience. Ready to make the switch? Explore our custom toddler floor beds and create a space designed for sweet dreams and independence.
